Today’s burgeoning youth bedding market looks vastly different from the limited selection of years past. Historically, manufacturers focused on affordability over performance, giving little consideration to the specific needs of growing children. Bedding producers today have discovered that, with the wealth of new data about the health benefits of good sleep, parents and grandparents are invested more than ever in the quality of sleep the children in their lives are receiving.
By spotlighting hygiene, safety, sustainability and durability—often wrapped in appealing, bold, whimsical packaging—retailers who provide youth-specific sleep solutions can capitalize on this growing trend, securing increased ticket sales while also potentially building brand loyalty at the very earliest stages of life.
1. Gold Bond
In an effort to grow its juvenile business, Gold Bond Mattress has recently introduced its Natural Support line of kids’ mattresses. Featuring a host of health and wellness benefits, the Natural Support collection was designed to specifically meet the comfort and safety needs of children. Comprised of eight mattresses—six one-sided versions with 8-inch profiles and two double-sided versions with 11-inch profiles—the entire line boasts high quality materials not often found in children’s mattresses, such as natural latex, micro-coils, gel and high-resiliency foam. Finished in an all-cotton ticking in white, gray and charcoal, each mattress is available with either lime, pink, navy or light blue trim. Of particular note, Gold Bond engineered the ticking with copper thread, enhancing the mattresses’ anti-bacterial properties resulting in a cleaner sleep surface. Priced to retail from $299 to $549 in twin, both dual-sided mattresses are also available in full and queen sizes.
Unlike many manufacturers who simply resize adult sleep products to create kids lines, PureCare spent months of careful design to engineer its comprehensive kids collection to meet the distinct comfort and health needs of growing children. The PureCare Kids line incorporates protective components like anti-bacterial, silver treated pillowcases and protectors and a five-sided mattress protector, ensuring a hypoallergenic sleeping surface. Also included are four growth-and-wellness pillows available in two unique silhouettes, each style offering different, customizable support options. As an added bonus, each youth pillow comes in a sturdy box that’s handy for storing treasured trinkets, and features hand-drawn, playfully designed interiors perfect for young artists to color.
3. Organic Mattress Inc.
With nearly two decades of mattress manufacturing experience, Organic Mattress Inc. (OMI) is no stranger to selling safer, healthier sleep. The company’s youth products all bear the same careful attention to quality and safety as OMI’s adult products, with crib mattresses available in either a super-firm, 260-coil innerspring assembly or extra-firm, hypoallergenic natural rubber core. OMI also offers the same supportive, comfortable rubber mattress in a hard-to-find oval shape for specialty cribs and bassinets. For children transitioning to a “big kid” bed, OMI’s low-profile, dual-sided Youth Bed is constructed out of either certified organic or natural rubber latex and covered with the company’s signature OrganicPedic knit quilting. The optional 11⁄2” thick natural rubber topper offers surface softness as children grow. Combining safety and comfort with a long-standing, staunch dedication to organic certification, OMI’s youth and baby collection offers parents peace of mind when it comes to the quality of sleep for their little ones.
Sporting soft, durable velour covers in eight bold, eye-catching colors, Glideaway’s Jubilee Sleepharmony youth mattresses make an immediate impression. But looks are not all these cheerful mattresses have going for them. Constructed from CertiPUR-US certified foam, each mattress features five inches of sturdy base foam for long lasting support topped with two inches of three-pound memory foam for just the right amount of kid-appropriate cushioning. Mesh panels along all four sides of the mattress promote breathability for cooler, more comfortable sleep. Retailing at $399, each distinctive mattress comes with a matching pillow filled with shredded memory foam, making for a pragmatic— yet whimsical—sleep set.
5. Three Happy Coconuts
Three Happy Coconuts, the brainchild of Palmpring USA CEO Camilla Kim, aims to provide a safe, chemical-free sleeping environment for the whole family, with a special emphasis on its smallest members. Comprised of two mattress styles (the 9-inch Heavenly Sandwich Bed and the 7-inch Vanilla Delight), two pillows (Happiness and Delight), one pillow topper (the 3-inch More Cream Please), one crib mattress (the 5-inch Coconut & Cream) and a mattress especially designed for an adjustable base (the 9-inch Caterpillar), the entire line features unique combinations of natural latex, coconut fiber (coir), cotton and wool. As with the products of its parent company, all Three Happy Coconuts items use certified organic materials throughout—not just in exterior components—and are carefully designed to reflect the company’s key values of family, comfort and safety.
6. Suite Sleep
Emphasizing sustainable, farm-to-bedroom products, Suite Sleep’s Little Lamb collection embodies the company’s endeavor to offer safe, comfortable sleep to everyone, including the youngest sleepers. Designed especially for small, growing bodies, the Little Lamb collection offers two roll-packed youth mattress options: the original all-latex Little Lamb Standard mattress with six inches of medium density, all-natural Dunlop latex or the Little Spring Pocket Coil mattress engineered with upcycled, pocketed USA steel coils and two inches of 100% natural latex. Both mattresses are finished with locally sourced American Dream wool and 100% certified organic cotton ticking. Organized around a unique “Grow With Me” system, the Little Lamb collection also includes two different toppers—one wool and the other latex—to add to the base mattress as the child grows and requires differing levels of comfort, as well as a washable wool comforter, certified organic cotton waterproof protector, and a pillow with three available fill options.
Performance bedding manufacturer Bedgear took its hi-tech approach to sleep and applied it to an extensive assortment of sleep products geared towards children. For babies, Bedgear offers a selection of Dri-Tec moisture-wicking crib sheets and either Dri-Tec or Ver-Tec waterproof protectors, with a focus on breathability and temperature regulation. For children aged two to four years old, the Toddler Performance Pillow blends Dri-Tec heat- and moisture-wicking fabric and Air-X ventilated panels with a unique “cuddle curve” shape specifically designed for a younger child’s proportions. For older children, Bedgear’s BG-X line takes the same Dri-Tec and Air-X technologies and spine-aligning curved shape, and adds pops of bold color for three kid-friendly designs: PUMP, NITRO and CRUSH. All of the youth pillows boast hypoallergenic, blended Boost foam to eliminate pillow bounce, resulting in deeper, more restful sleep.
Founded by first-time grandfather and 30-year environmental engineer veteran Barry Cik, Naturepedic was born out of Cik’s frustration at being unable to find a crib mattress that met his stringent non-toxic requirements. So he designed one himself. Since then, Naturepedic has grown its youth collection to include an expansive array of both baby and kid products, including breathable, high-quality mattresses, protectors, sheeting and pillows, all touting a myriad of certifications such as Global Organic Textile Standard, OCS100 Organic Content Standard and Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody. Recently Naturepedic launched an allergen friendly mattress for older kids: the Verse. Featuring an organic cotton fill topped with a plant-based comfort layer made from potatoes and premium encased coils, this supportive, chemical-free mattress comes rolled and compressed for easy stocking and delivery.
